Case Study: Team Dormouse's Three Counties Walk

Team Dormouse is a small band of nature-loving friends who want to help species and ecosystems recover and flourish. The group completed a sponsored walk through Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, raising a fantastic £860 for BBOWT's Nature Recovery Fund!

Some of the team, including Kate Hussey, had fundraised in the past for The Wildlife Trusts’ Big Wild Walk. She knew how much fun it could be, even in the pouring rain!

Kate said: "We think the work BBOWT is doing is brilliant and vitally important - both for nature and people - and the chance to contribute to such a worthwhile cause as the Nature Recovery Fund seemed like a huge privilege to us."

The group set up a JustGiving page and promoted the walk through their network of community groups, clubs and societies, as well as advertising in local magazines and newsletters. When asked what advice they would have for others thinking about fundraising, Kate said:

"Contact BBOWT and ask for their support - you’ll get all the encouragement and handholding you need, and more! Plan well enough ahead and plan thoroughly. Even a simple event like ours took hours of organising and lots of discussion, so you need to factor that in so you can enjoy the journey and not get stressed."

Case study: Ned's Three Peaks Challenge

Ned took on the Three Peaks Challenge and raised over £430 for BBOWT!

"I thought it would be important to choose a challenge which I would not only enjoy but also do in aid of a charity which meant something to me. Between 2016 and 2017 I completed a traineeship at BBOWT and as such I had an understanding of how they worked and where the funds I raised would go. I felt that by doing this I would be able to give back to an organisation that has helped me so much with training and development for the career I wish to go into.

"One of the hardest parts of the whole challenge for me was fundraising. One of the best pieces of advice I could give would be to know beforehand who you’re going to be asking to help you towards your goal. Whether this is friends, family, colleagues or anyone else. Once you know this you can set a realistic goal for yourself.”

The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust works to give wildlife a helping hand across the three counties. This includes monitoring species and running projects to support declining species such as water voles, and threatened habitats such as chalk grassland.

We look after more than 80 nature reserves spanning more than 2,500 hectares. Our nature reserves are central to our work to secure a better future for wildlife.
