Nightjar Walk - Snelsmore Common, Friday 4 July
Snelsmore Common Country Park,
4 miles north-west of Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 3BQ (nearest)Event details
About the event
Join the Wardens for a late evening walk on Snelsmore Common to witness the strange and wonderful night time antics of the elusive and enigmatic nightjar birds. As it gets dark the birds wake up and begin their courtship displays – churring, wing clapping and ‘gwipping’. We can’t guarantee that we will see/hear them but we stand a very good chance.
Open to all, but participants must be able to keep quiet so as not to disturb these birds. There will be a short (10-15 minute) walk from the carpark to the heath along concrete and gravel paths.
Bring torches and binoculars. We would suggest wearing dark coloured clothing as this gives a better chance of seeing and hearing the birds.
Park at Snelsmore Common and meet in front of The Snugg Café. Please ensure that you park the café/toilets side of the barrier to avoid getting locked in the car park.
It can be muddy if raining a day or two beforehand, in which case waterproof footwear such as boots or wellies are advised.
