I have unwanted wildlife in my garden
We encourage people to embrace the wildlife found in their gardens. Many species are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and have an important role to play in the local ecosystem.
If it is deemed absolutely necessary, i.e. the animal is at risk of harm, you can talk to a licensed ecological consultant about the safe, responsible and legal removal of wildlife.
Many species are protected by law under UK legislation, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Protected species that can occur in buildings and gardens in our three counties include birds, bats, badgers, dormice and great crested newts. For professional ecology services on legally protected species, please contact BBOWT’s wholly-owned ecological Consultancy, Future Nature WTC.
I want to enquire about a planning application that threatens wildlife
We screen and comment on as many planning applications as possible, but we do not have the resources to deal with the many thousands of applications submitted across our three counties each year and have to prioritise those that present a significant threat to wildlife.
You can find extensive information here about planning and wildlife, including guidance on what to do if you are concerned that a planning application threatens wildlife.
I have an enquiry about wildlife crime
The Wildlife Trusts have no legal power to stop any direct threats to wildlife. If you believe a protected species or habitat is under immediate threat please contact your local police station via 101 and ask to speak to a Wildlife Crimes Officer.
For further information about wildlife crime and how to report it, click here.
A number of species are afforded legal protection under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. For example the more common species of reptile (adder, common lizard, grass snake and slow worm) are listed on Schedule 5 and are protected against killing, injury and sale under Section 9, making it an offence to:
- Intentionally or recklessly kill or injure a reptile
- Sell, offer or expose for sale, or have in your possession, or transport, for the purpose of sale, any live or dead specimen or anything derived from a reptile
You can find out more about protected species on the Natural England website.
I want to get in touch about an injured animal
We are not an animal welfare charity and so not have the facilities or expertise to deal with wildlife rescues. Please contact the RSPCA or a local wildlife rescue centre and they will be able to give the best advice.

I'm concerned about ash dieback
Ash dieback is a fatal disease expected to kill 80 to 95% of the country’s ash trees. In response, BBOWT is carrying out a programme of tree safety works on our nature reserves. To find out more please visit our ash dieback page.
For tree surveys and arboriculture services, including ash dieback surveys and bat roost assessment surveys for trees, please contact BBOWT’s wholly-owned ecological Consultancy, Future Nature WTC.
