About the event

The course will include a blended approach of classroom and practical outdoor sessions, including an evening session to locate caterpillars using the innovative approach of using UV light.

Course breakdown:

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Classroom session:
    • Introduction to Hairstreaks
    • Common Threats
    • Species identification and Phenology
    • Overview of habitat management principles  
    • Day time survey techniques and where to look.
    • Introduction to UV survey techniques
    • Break
    • Outdoor session
    • Break
    • Travel to Finemere Wood Nature reserve
    • Nighttime UV session

Following the course, participants will be expected to undertake in targeted surveys using the methods learned throughout the day to record Hairstreak butterflies and report back to project staff via irecord.

This course is part of the Reconnecting Bernwood Otmoor Ray project, made possible thanks to National Lottery Heritage Fund.

All necessary equipment will be provided. Please wear warm clothing for the evening surveys, as temperatures may drop. Bring waterproof clothing in case of rain, and wear suitable footwear (e.g., walking boots or wellies) for the outdoor sessions, as the terrain may be wet and uneven. Parking is available at the Sailing Club and at Finemere Nature Reserve during the evening session (travel to Finemere will be in your own vehicles). Please note that the end time of the event is an approximate and is weather dependent.

A light meal (e.g., soup) will be provided in the evening, as well as tea/coffee and snacks throughout the day.
