Our future happiness is dependent on the foundations that we lay down in this present moment
Wellbeing walks at College Lake
As mindfulness expert Andy Puddicombe reminds us, our future happiness depends on the present. This idea lies at the heart of our wellbeing walks at College Lake.
In September, the Learning Team ran our second course of three fortnightly Tune in Tuesday walks, focused on taking time for yourself and practicing presence.
We live in a fast-paced world, filled with family, work, volunteering, and daily chores. At the same time, we’re bombarded with information from every angle, often through screens. When was the last time you took time for yourself? Time away from your phone, computer, TV. Time to recharge, reset, and show up as the best version of yourself. Time for being, not doing.
Do you often find yourself thinking about the past or planning the future? Does this leave you feeling worried or anxious? The present moment is where restorative magic happens, helping you make better decisions for yourself and others.
On our walks, we use a simple tool: engaging our senses to become aware of our surroundings, which creates mental stillness. Listening, looking, smelling, touching, and tasting anchor us to the present. The simple act of noticing birdsong or the soft texture of a hazel leaf connects us deeply with nature, but this practice can be done anywhere—whether in your car, before bed, or as you wake up. It calms the mind and opens you to rest or the capacity to manage challenges ahead.
If you’re facing a big decision or feeling stretched thin, pause. Notice your surroundings—what do you hear, see, or smell? Let your thoughts come and go. If your mind drifts to tasks or worries, gently refocus on one of your senses. This practice benefits not only you but also those around you.
Our walks are open to all and designed to help you set aside time for self-reflection and connection—with nature, yourself, and others. Each 2-hour session includes guided activities, sensory exploration, silent thought, and a warm herbal tea to reflect on the experience.
Here’s what one participant said about their experience:
“Thank you for my wonderful wellbeing walks. Not only a splendid fortnightly dollop of regenerative ‘me time’, but you’ve reminded me to slow down and get more from each day. I’m already incorporating your techniques into my daily life and sharing them with others.”
Don’t miss the chance to give yourself this gift of time and presence. Join us in spring 2025 to reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
